The 201 Youngcare Benefit Concert has now sold out. Thanks to everyone that purchased a ticket!
19/01/2010 Bernard Fanning to perform at & curate the 2010 Youngcare Benefit Concert
As we not-so-subtly hinted at last week, Bernard has been confirmed to perform at a very special concert in Brisbane on Friday 26th March in support of Youngcare.
Bernard will team up with ARIA Award winning songstress Clare Bowditch to curate a very special line up of guest performers for the evening. If last year’s Youngcare Benefit Concert is anything to go by, concert goers are in for a treat!
In 2010, the concert will be hosted by Julian Morrow (ABC’s The Chaser).
As you all know, Youngcare is an organisation that has long been close to Bernard’s heart. The Brisbane-based charity aims to drive change and provide choice for young people with high care needs living in aged care.
“Youngcare is tirelessly working to find solutions.I would not want to live in aged care before my time, so why should others have to?”
“If my music can raise awareness and money for Youngcare to continue to deliver quality care for Australia’s young, then that’s great,” Bernard said.
Clare adds "I support Youngcare because they're a small organisation trying to tackle an enormous injustice:put simply, the 6,500 young Australians living in nursing homes should not be there.“
Tickets to this one-off event are on sale 9AM FRIDAY JANUARY 29TH.

01/10/2008 Bernard Fanning to perform at the Youngcare Benefit Concert
It’s been a long time between news, but we’re very happy to report that Bernard will be putting his solo hat on for a one off show in support of Youngcare. The Bernard Fanning Youngcare Benefit Concert will take place on Saturday November 8th at The Tivoli, Brisbane. Tickets to this exclusive event go on sale this coming MONDAY OCTOBER 6th AT 9AM from Ticketek.
Also taking part will be Kasey Chambers, Whitley and a surprise guest performer. Bernard is also acting as Musical Director and co-host of this year’s event.
As most of you will know, Bernard has been a long time supporter of Youngcare. The organisation aims to build world-class care apartments that offer a dignified and relevant lifestyle for young people with high care needs.
“Youngcare delivers solutions. I would not want to live in aged care before my time if I became in need of high care, so why should others have to? If my music can raise awareness and money for Youngcare to deliver quality care, then that’s great,” Bernard said.
“Sickness and disability happens, and when it does for young people they should become a priority in the community’s eyes – it shouldn’t be ignored. Youngcare gives back dignity and hope and that’s why they have my full support and will do as long as this issue remains,” he said.
In the 2005 Australian Health Review it was revealed less than 45 percent of young people living in aged care were visited by friends less than once a year. Twenty-one percent went outside the home less than once a month and 34 percent almost never participated in community-based activities such as shopping.
In December 2007, Youngcare opened the first ever Youngcare Apartments in Brisbane in collaboration with the community, business and the Queensland and Federal Governments. The Jindalee-based Apartments offer the highest standard of 24-hour care for young people in Australia.
Bernard’s other band Powderfinger performed a storming rendition of ‘On My Mind’ (with a bit of AC/DC’s ‘Long Way To The Top’ thrown in!) at the AFL Grand Final on Saturday. Powderfinger’s seminal album ‘Odyssey Number Five’ was also featured in the excellent SBS series ‘Great Aussie Albums’ on Saturday. If you’d like to get yourself a copy, head on over to iTunes where it’s available for only $10.99.
25 January 2007 Gday from LA!
G’day Everyone,
How’s your form?
I am writing this letter from what is supposed to be sunny Los Angeles but is, in fact, bloody freezing.
Ok first some housekeeping.Over the next few weeks we are going to be adding performances from live shows and little bits and pieces for the last year, so make sure you keep coming back and checking out the sites for new downloads and to leave flattering messages!
I primarily want to say hi and to thank everyone for their support for my album and all of the shows that we have done in the last year and a bit. It really, honestly, has been an overwhelming response and I am happy to say that I really enjoyed it.I want to make special mention of my band Andrew Morris, Bedge, Matt and Duano. They helped to make the year fantastically fun and exciting. Check out Moz’s new albumValleys, which was recorded at my place. Matt has one coming in the next few months.
It was, in retrospect, a pretty strange ‘year off’ from Powderfinger duties. I do feel like I learned a lot about writing and performing, and hopefully I can inject some of that into the band when we get back into action this year.
Secondly, I especially want to thank anyone who donated their time, money and/or effort to the Youngcare cause. That support, has also been astonishing, but when so many people are so willing to contribute, it demonstrates that it is a cause whose time has come.
I am staying here in Hollywood until March to record a new album with my ‘real’ band Powderfinger (www.powderfinger.com or www.myspace.com/powderfinger).We are working with an American producer called Rob Schnapf who has previously worked with Beck and Elliott Smith amongst others. I must confess that Los Angeles has in the past, not been my favourite place in the world, but so far we have been having a ball……sampling many of the local beverages and failing to hide our disappointment at the 2am closing time. We have found a beergarden on Sunset Boulevard, which is our own little piece of Queensland in America.
Also, there is a large Hispanic population here, so it gives me a chance to practise my, admittedly poor, Spanish. Pity poor Alma, who cleaned my room here for the last two weeks. She has been subjected to some very poor Spanglish by me, spoken in a thick Madrid/Brisbane accent! However she has filled me in on a couple of Mexican insults that I might test out next time we are back out on the road. Be warned!
I can strongly recommend any of the Central American soap operas that are jam packed with the usual amorous dramas, murderous plots, deceitful entrepreneurs and generally shady characters, but are somehow more appealing when one can only understand about half of what is happening.
We started recording last week and everything is coming along nicely. We are really looking forward to getting out on the road this year and playing these new tunes.
Ok champs, until next time……………lots of love ……..Adios …………….
Bernardxx

12 August 2006 BERNARD TO TOUR IN SUPPORT OF LOST HIGHWAY RELEASE
NASHVILLE, TN - Bernard Fanning’s debut solo album Tea & Sympathy is approaching five times platinum in his native Australia. With an Australian ARIA No.1 debut under his belt, the coveted No. 1 spot on the 2006 Triple J Hottest 100 with stand out track ‘Wish You Well’ and many a sold out tour, APRA’s (ASCAP equivalent) 2006 Australian Songwriter of the Year is now taking his trademark voice and country-tinged rock songs to the rest of the world.
The renowned Nashville-based record label Lost Highway - home to the late-great Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson and Ryan Adams - has welcomed Bernard Fanning to the fold. Tea & Sympathy was released in the USA on August 8, with the UK release also through Lost Highway/Mercury quick to follow on September 11. Bernard and full band will preview Tea & Sympathy in a series of intimate live shows in the US throughout September.
9/12 New York, NY Mercury Lounge 9/14 Nashville, TN 12th & Porter 9/15 San Francisco, CA Café du Nord 9/18 Los Angeles, CA The Roxy 9/19 Seattle, WA Crocodile Cafe 9/20 Vancouver, BC The Media Club
Fanning recorded Tea and Sympathy at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath, England with co-producer Tchad Blake (Los Lobos, Tom Waits, Richard Thompson). The English country-side brought a new dimension to Bernard’s songwriting and it was here that the key track ‘Wish You Well’ was penned. The album is an effective compound of country, blues, folk and rock and inspiration has been drawn from artists of these genres both past and present.
It’s not all that difficult to make a record that sounds like it could have been recorded in 1972. Making one that can’t be placed on the timeline however, is a mighty tall order. That’s what Bernard Fanning has achieved with Tea and Sympathy.“I’ve always loved that ‘70s sound,” Fanning says of the overall tone of the record. “Albums like Led Zeppelin II, what Jimmy Page did with open tunings -- what you might call Led Zeppelin country. Not that it really sounds like that band, but just in keeping with the country blues style of that period. For want of a better word, I think it has a certain gentleness and beauty that balances out the rock element”.
From the intricate finger-picking that underscores the weary-but-hopeful “Thrill Is Gone” to the fiddle-kissed “Songbird,” Tea and Sympathy gets that balance right, largely due to its unflagging organic vibe. And unlike the self-consciousness that accompanies so much self-consciously retro rock, Fanning’s compositions exude a quiet elegance and an affable confidence -- traits that mark him as the sort of guy who’s capable of becoming a part of rock’s rich tapestry, rather than merely a mender of its threads. To help capture the essence he wanted for Tea and Sympathy -- “something that was earthy, not all perfect and sparkly” -- Fanning co-produced the album with Blake, bringing to the table only a set of tunes in a skeletal state and a clear view of which fork in the musical road they were to take.
“What I really wanted, more than a specific sound, was to write songs with a strong emotional element. Unfortunately, the idea of emotional music has been co-opted by ‘emo’ bands, and some people think it’s all about screaming. I wanted to show that it could be presented differently”. To do so, Fanning called upon an international array of musicians toting all manner of down-home instrumentation -- from mandolin to fiddle and lap steel guitar -- all instruments that the singer says “convey a lot more than you can do with electric guitars”. That palette of sounds lends a country tinge to several of the disc’s cuts -- notably the plaintive “Sleeping Rough” and the O Brother Where Art Thou-worthy “Yesterday’s Gone”.
“I don’t think I was consciously trying to create country music -- and I wouldn’t want to insult people who make real country music by saying that I have. I just respect the genre a lot. In the old days, they were really telling it like it was, which you don’t hear much these days, other than in the hip-hop that’s not obsessed with cash and sex.”
Bernard succeeds in peeling back the layers, both emotionally and aurally, throughout Tea and Sympathy. While many of the album’s songs deal vividly with loss -- Fanning says, “I was in a relationship that broke down, and writing was a part of the mourning process” -- its lingering notes are ones of optimism about what lays beyond the horizon.

May 8 2006 Bernard announces a special concert and single in support of Australian charity Youngcare
MBernard Fanning is set to support Australian charity Youngcare with both a special live show and the release of “Watch Over Me”, the only single from his four times platinum album Tea & Sympathy.
On April 9, Sixty Minutes aired an interview with Brisbane couple David and Shevaune Conry about Youngcare, a charity that David set up in a desperate effort to create an appropriate care facility for Shevaune who suffers from MS and at the age of just 33 requires full time care. The story included an interview with the couple’s old mate Bernard Fanning and made a very brief mention of a fundraising concert to take place some time in the near future. The following day, Youngcare and Bernard’s label were literally inundated with enquiries about the show.
Following this intense interest, Bernard is delighted to announce that he and his band will take to the stage at Brisbane’s City Hall on Friday June 23, along with Australia’s first lady of country Kasey Chambers, for the YoungcareBenefit Concert.
Tickets for this special show will be available from Wednesday 17th May from the Youngcare website www.youngcare.com.au
“David and Shevaune are old friends of mine so I am very familiar with their story and the terrible situation they have been faced with. To then find out that this is the story of at least 6000 other young people in this country, the youngest being a ten year old, well it astounded me. For a young person to be so sick that they need full time care is devastating to begin with let alone being forced to live in an aged facility and alienated from everything relevant to their age and lifestyle. The aim of this show and the single release is to raise money for Youngcare but also to raise awareness of the terrible situation that these young people face” said Bernard Fanning.
The single “Watch Over Me” which is dedicated to Shevaune, will be available from retail outlets from June 24, the day after the show. This is the only single to be released from Bernard’s enormously successful solo album and Bernard Fanning, Universal Music Australia, Dew Process Recordings and BMG Music Publishing will each be donating their net profits or royalties from the sale of the single to Youngcare. The good folks at Ernst and Young will be providing their auditing services and keeping tracks on all the proceeds from the single.

21 April 2006 Bernard's Easter 'Break'
Bernard knocked off some sensational performances at both the East and West Coast Blues and Roots Festivals and The Great Escape Festival during April.
