An update from Bernard

G’day Everybody,

Greetings from Madrid. My family and I have temporarily relocated over here again while we have the chance and are enjoying ourselves immensely. Autumn (Otoño) is just kicking in. After spending almost all of my life in Brisbane which has essentially two seasons –

1. Farken hot and steamy

2. a bit less hot and steamy for about two weeks in August

– it’s a beautiful thing to witness the kaleidoscope of colour and temperature that  northern hemisphere seasons present. Red, yellow, orange, purple and brown. Soon enough it will give way to glorious blue skies and icy sierra winds as the craggy, leafless trees battens down the hatches for winter. For now it is beautiful. I do miss Jacaranda bloom time in Brisbane though.

After a bit of a break I am in the beginning stages of writing a new record and am looking forward to playing some new songs at the shows coming up in Australia in late January. A new album is still a way off which explains why we aren’t doing gigs all over the country. So don’t hassle me, ok?  That will come later next year. I haven’t played any new songs at live shows for about 10 years so I am excited about doing that again. So if you do decide to come along, please clap or boo vociferously depending on how the songs strike you. It would be great to have the feedback.

I haven’t set myself any kind of agenda for the type of record I am going to make, but am just sitting down with my guitar and seeing what comes out. I suppose I have returned to the way that I have always written, which is to say…….let it happen. No agendas, no exclusions and none of the arbitrary rules that I imposed on myself last time I was here. I learned a lot from the experience of making Departures and feel like I have already found a lot of benefits in returning to simple ideas. Listening to Hiss Golden Messenger, Courtney Barnett, Little Feat, Ryan Adams and Leon Russell has certainly inspired me in that regard.  So I am happily busy and enthusiastic about the time ahead and looking forward to catching up with old friends and new when I get back.

I hope that most of the time, you are well and happy. See you next year.
